Who's on the faders

I'm Chris McMillan, a Scottish mixing engineer. I started mixing bands at 17 and haven't stopped since. That's 28 years of making records sound right.

I cut my teeth on live sound, in tiny sweaty rooms and on big stages. That's where you learn what actually matters: the song, the energy, and the bit that makes a crowd move. Records come first now, and I bring the same thinking to every mix. They should hit hard, sit right on any speaker, and still sound like you.

Those years behind live desks are also why I'm the person to rescue your gig recording. I know exactly how messy a desk multitrack gets: bleed everywhere, no room mics, crowd noise in the vocal mics. I like that challenge. Martin Metcalfe & The Fornicators' Live Unplugged (3 × CD) is one I recorded and mixed.

In the studio I've recorded, mixed and mastered records for bands across punk, grind, metal, indie and psych. That includes engineering Medals' Disguises (mixed by JP Reid, mastered by Howie Weinberg) and co-producing, mixing and engineering Barrie-James O'Neill's Mad Man.

Cassini Technical Services is my business. I'm the one you talk to, and the one who mixes your song. Some older heads might remember me as Boyjunior.

How remote mixing works

  1. 01

    Send files + a reference

Send a link to your session (WeTransfer, Dropbox or Google Drive) and a reference track you love. I'll check the files for free and give you a fixed price.

  2. 02

    Book with a 50% deposit

The deposit holds your slot. The rest is due when you're happy, before the full-quality files are sent.

  3. 03

    I mix it

You get a first mix within two weeks of the files and deposit arriving.

  4. 04

    Review the mix

It comes to you unmastered, just loud enough to judge. 2 rounds of changes included. Put all your notes in one list, with timestamps.

  5. 05

    Sign it off

When the mix is right, you approve it in writing. Changes after that are £25 a round.

  6. 06

    Mastering + final files

If you've booked mastering, I master the signed-off mixes, the whole EP or album together. Then you get WAV (24-bit), MP3, instrumental and any extras, ready for your distributor.

Prepping your stems

  • Export every track as a mono or stereo WAV, all starting from the same point (bar 1, 0:00).
  • Use the session's sample rate (44.1 or 48 kHz) and 24-bit.
  • No master-bus processing. Leave in any effects that are part of the sound, and tell me which.
  • Name the files clearly (Kick In, Gtr L, Lead Vox…) and include the tempo.
  • Add a rough mix bounce so I can hear how you want it to sound.

Send me your song

Tell me what you're working on. I'll reply within a couple of days with a free file check and a fixed quote.
